The word is French and means “putting into the movie.” Each quality helps contribute to the viewers overall interpretation of the movie.
When the movie the Sixth Sense, opens up the lighting and mood is both dark and depressing. The shot opens in the cellar dimly lit by a single light bulb, until the bathroom scene, when it is lit up by candles. There are a lot of shadows which cause the dreary mood and feeling. The colors in the movie were very dull and gray. The director wanted us to be scared and uneasy.
The camera angles are really important in the scene where the couple goes up the steps because it moves from character to character. We also see the camera focus on an open window and a broken telephone, and then to the bathroom. When they look into the plaque that Bruce Willis’ character has, you can see their reflection in it. This shows the relationship between the characters and the plaque and how that plays a role in their lives.
Another part of mise en scene is proxemics. The characters (Bruce Willis and his wife) in the film are close together much throughout the movie. When characters are close together it shows that they have a strong or intimate relationship.
